For the past few weeks we’ve been experiencing a decreasing outdoor air temperatures on a daily basis.
- Each day seems a few degrees colder than the last, and it’s been a major transition period from our usual summer heat and humidity.
Around here, it seems like the heat and sunshine is never ending. For many months, you continually sweat and rely on air conditioning. Just when it seems like summer is never going to stop and you are stuck in a perpetual heat trap, the weather suddenly breaks without warning. For us, this happened just a few weeks ago. Don’t get me wrong, everybody feels extremely relieved on those first few days of cool, fresh air. However, as the air temperature continues to do, public opinion quickly shifts. One day everyone is happy about the fall weather, and the next day everybody is up in arms about the pending winter season. This is especially true in my home, where we’ve been trying to live without any heat for the past few weeks. When the outdoor air temperature finally declined, our heating system was not prepared for action. We flipped on the furnace one day and the central heating system began making terrible sounds. A few minutes later, it stopped working. We’ve been trying to get by without a central heating system ever since. I realized, I’m pretty skilled at living without any heat. The more I think about it, the colder my childhood seems. Growing up, we rarely utilized the heat so that my mom could save money on the energy bill. In my own adult life, I’ve always relied heavily on the central furnace. However, these days when push comes to shove, I’ve been living quite warmly without any modern heating sources. I bet I could go all winter without repairing the furnace. My roommates might not agree.
